Biography Works
Since July 2012 the artistic director and principal conductor of the choir is Jānis Liepiņš (1988) who had been the assistant conductor of the choir Kamēr... since 2006. Jānis graduated from Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in 2012 with a BA in choral conducting; his fi nal exam included a remarkable concert featuring a contemporary a capella part for choir as well as Puccini’s Messa di Gloria with the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, soloists Aleksandrs Antoņenko and Jānis Apeinis, and the youth choir Kamēr.... Now he continues his studies at JVLMA in orchestral conducting. Jānis’ path to choir conducting started at the Riga Dome Choir School’s Department of Choral Conducting, where his teachers were Valdis Bernhofs and Māris Sirmais. In 2012, under the young master’s baton Kamēr… won two first prizes and Grand Prix at the Bela Bartok choir competition in Debrecen, Hungary. These wins allowed the choir to participate in further competition in Arezzo, Italy (2013), where Kamēr… was awarded the European Grand Prix in choral singing. In honour of these achievements and in recognition of successful debut concerts with the Latvian National Symphony orchestra, Liepaja Symphony orchestra and Sinfonietta Rīga, Jānis Liepiņš received the Great Music Award as the “Young Artist of 2013”.
