Kažociņš, Kārlis (1886 - 1920)

Biography   Works

K. Kazocins belongs to that paradoxical group of composers whose popularity hinges basically on one work. His output amounts to several dozen works for choir, solo songs, and miniatures for piano. He studied chemistry and had only a limited musical education. The most productive years of his brief life were spent as a choir conductor and music critic; quite frequently he wrote the lyrics for his own songs. He drew his inspiration mainly from the realistic and psychological lyricism of Emīls Dārziņš, adapting it to a narrower range of emotions – the expression of the dreams and longings of the oppressed common man. The emotional intensity of his music, however, is expressed gracefully and melodically.
